Tank

Tank is an informal Dota 2 term for a hero that can absorb or survive heavy pressure, usually through health, armor, resistance, barriers, healing or other defensive tools.

What is Tank in Dota 2?

Unlike many role-based games, Dota 2 does not use tank as a strict numbered position. Players use the word informally for heroes that are difficult to kill or comfortable standing at the front of a fight. That durability can come from a large health pool, armor, magic resistance, damage reduction, barriers, healing, evasion or abilities that make the hero hard to focus down.

A durable hero is not automatically useful as a tank. To matter, the hero also needs a reason for opponents to interact with it: initiation, disables, damage, auras, objective pressure or protection for teammates. Simply surviving while the rest of the team dies does not create much value.

How Tank is used in a match

Teams may describe an offlaner as a tank when they expect that hero to show first, absorb initial spells and keep enemies occupied. A tanky core can also stand on high ground or in narrow areas to give fragile teammates space to cast from safer positions.

Because Dota damage comes in several forms, tankiness is matchup-dependent. A hero built to resist physical attacks may still be vulnerable to magical burst, pure damage or control that prevents defensive abilities from being used.

Do not confuse Tank with...

Do not confuse tank with offlaner. Many offlaners are durable, but position 3 can also be a ranged damage dealer, summoner or other archetype. Tank describes survivability and frontline function, not a fixed position.
