Trade (Lane Trade)
A lane trade is an exchange of attacks, spells, health and resources between opposing laners, usually judged by which side gains more value for the cost.
What is Trade (Lane Trade) in Dota 2?
Trading is the repeated exchange of pressure during the laning stage. A player attacks or casts a spell on an opponent and expects some response. The result is favorable when the player gives up less health, mana, regeneration, positioning or creep access than the opponent does. A trade can still be good even without a kill if it forces the enemy to use more recovery or leave the wave.
The surrounding lane matters. Creep aggro, tower range, nearby supports and the state of the wave can turn the same attack into a good or bad trade. Players therefore evaluate more than raw damage: a small health advantage may be worthless if it costs several last hits or leaves the hero exposed to a gank.
How Trade (Lane Trade) is used in a match
A strong lane trade often happens when one player has more allied creeps nearby, a spell advantage, better regeneration, or a level timing. The player uses that temporary edge to pressure the opponent and then disengages before the opponent can recover the value.
Repeated favorable trades can create lane control without a kill. An enemy who is too low to approach the wave may miss gold and experience, while the stronger side gains freedom to pull, secure a rune, or pressure the tower. The best trade is therefore the one that improves the next decision, not necessarily the one with the largest damage number.
Do not confuse Trade (Lane Trade) with...
A lane trade is an exchange of combat resources between laners. It is unrelated to trading cosmetic items or account inventory. Harassment is pressure on an opponent; a trade specifically emphasizes the give-and-take between both sides.
