Wards
Wards are placeable vision tools: Observer Wards reveal normal vision, while Sentry Wards provide detection through True Sight in their area.
What is Wards in Dota 2?
Wards let teams control information without keeping a hero in the same location. Observer Wards provide normal vision around their placement area, helping reveal enemy movements and objective approaches. Sentry Wards serve a different purpose: they provide True Sight that can reveal eligible invisible units and enemy wards, but they are not a substitute for Observer vision.
Ward placement is a strategic choice because each location answers a different question. A defensive ward protects farming routes, an aggressive ward watches enemy movement, and an objective ward can reveal approaches to a fight before opponents arrive.
How Wards is used in a match
Supports usually place wards where the team expects to play next rather than scattering them randomly. Before pushing a tower, taking the Tormentor or invading a jungle, vision can show whether the enemy is rotating in time to contest. Sentries are used to protect an area from invisible threats and to search for opposing wards.
Teams also think about how obvious a ward location is. A ward with excellent vision but predictable placement may be removed quickly, while a less obvious ward can survive longer and provide more useful information over time.
Do not confuse Wards with...
Observer and Sentry Wards have different jobs. Observer Wards provide normal vision; Sentry Wards provide True Sight for detection. A Watcher is a separate neutral map structure that can be captured for temporary vision.
