Tinker

9 min readWinio Team

Tinker sits at #2 on the entire ban chart despite a middling 47.6% win rate, and that gap is the whole story: pilots who understand Rearm timing are miserable to lane against, while pilots who don't hand away a free game. The hero doesn't reward mechanical flash so much as a spreadsheet mindset — knowing exactly which cooldown comes back when. Get that part right and Tinker pressures every lane on the map at once; get it wrong and you're a squishy caster standing in the open. Below is the current 7.41e patch, the build order that holds up in pubs and pro play alike, and the counters worth drafting around.

Role and Position Tinker Plays

Tinker is almost exclusively a mid hero: 90.6% of his games are played there, since the lane gets him to level 6 and Rearm on the fastest possible timer, which is the whole point of the hero.

When to pick Tinker:

  • your team wants constant area damage and lane pressure for the full 40 minutes, not just a late-game peak;
  • the enemy draft has no obvious burst-mobility tool to catch a caster out of position (no Blink, no invisibility on a roamer);
  • the map favors constant rotations — Keen Conveyance lets Tinker teleport to friendly structures, units, and (at level 3) heroes without spending a Town Portal Scroll.

When to skip him:

  • the enemy already has visible high-mobility catch heroes (Storm Spirit, Nyx Assassin) ready to isolate a squishy backline;
  • the game plan needs early physical pressure rather than positional magic damage;
  • your team already has a similar area-damage pusher and doesn't need a second one.

Tinker's Strengths

  • Rearm resets every ability's cooldown, so a full combo can land two or three times in the same fight;
  • Eureka! passively cuts item cooldowns by 1% per 3 Intelligence, up to 60% — Tinker's own items come back faster the more he stacks the stat;
  • Laser deals pure damage and applies a 100% miss-chance blind, which shuts down enemy carries mid-fight;
  • Deploy Turrets airdrops three turrets that knock enemies back and keep firing on their own, pairing damage with area denial;
  • Keen Conveyance gives free, instant repositioning to structures and (later) allied heroes, without burning a scroll.

Tinker's Weaknesses

  • extremely fragile once caught — instant control or a well-timed silence collapses the hero's whole game plan;
  • Rearm timing has to be exact; misusing a cooldown before the reset leaves Tinker with nothing to answer a fight;
  • low base survivability without defensive items;
  • Laser's 600 range forces Tinker into risky proximity to land it;
  • heavily dependent on stacking Intelligence — the item-cooldown reduction from Eureka! caps out slowly without it.

Tinker's Abilities

Eureka! (innate, passive) — every 3 points of Intelligence trims 1% off item cooldowns, capped at 60%. Effectively free value that scales with every Intelligence item Tinker buys.

Laser (Q) — fires a beam that deals 75/150/225/300 pure damage and blinds the target (100% miss chance) for 3–4.5 seconds. Aghanim's Scepter turns it into Shrink Ray, which also shrinks the target and reduces its current and max health.

March of the Machines (W) — spawns a wave of robotic minions in a 900-radius area for 6 seconds, dealing repeated magic damage. With Aghanim's Scepter the robots heal allies they pass through instead of only hurting enemies.

Deploy Turrets (E) — the 7.41 replacement for the old Defense Matrix. Drops three uncontrollable turrets that knock enemies (and Tinker) back on landing, then auto-fire missiles at the nearest hero for 4.5 seconds.

Keen Conveyance (innate, no cooldown-key ability) — a channeled teleport to a friendly structure at level 1, to friendly units at level 2, and to friendly heroes at level 3. This is Tinker's rotation and escape tool in one.

Rearm (ultimate) — after a short channel, resets the cooldown on every one of Tinker's abilities. Everything else in the kit exists to be reused through this spell.

Warp Flare (granted by Aghanim's Shard) — throws a flare that damages, roots, and displaces an enemy away from Tinker, with the teleport distance scaling by how close the target already is.

Build, Items, and Strategies

Skill order: start Laser for lane harass and denies, then alternate with March of the Machines for push and area damage; level Deploy Turrets after the core two are online. Take Rearm at every opportunity it's available.

Talents: the level 10 choice is between +1 second of March of the Machines duration (stronger push) and extra manacost/manaloss reduction (more casts per mana pool) — pick based on whether the game plan is pressure or sustain.

Starting items (regardless of lane): Tango, Clarity, and Iron Branch — Tinker casts constantly on the lane and burns mana fast.

Mana-and-cooldown build — when the team needs constant area damage for the whole game: rush Soul Ring for a free mana pool, then build into Aghanim's Scepter for the Shrink Ray upgrade on Laser.

Farm-focused build — when the priority is clearing waves and camps quickly: Soul Ring into Shiva's Guard, which adds an AoE slow that pairs with March of the Machines and Deploy Turrets.

Reactive items: Black King Bar to enter fights without being shut down by control, plus Glimmer Cape or Lotus Orb for extra survivability against burst.

Pro tip: land the full ability combo before Rearm, not after — every cooldown you use before resetting it gets used twice as efficiently.

Footnote: the exact item order should flex around whether the team needs maximum ability resource or faster creep clear.

Timings, Roshan, and Power Spikes

0–10 minutes: hold the lane with Laser, spending mana carefully while waiting for level 6.

10–20 minutes: first power spike — with the ultimate online, Tinker starts influencing multiple lanes at once through Keen Conveyance.

20–35 minutes: second power spike — with Aghanim's Scepter and a stacked Intelligence pool, Tinker becomes one of the strongest sources of sustained magic pressure on the map.

Roshan window: Deploy Turrets and March of the Machines let the team contest or hold the Roshan pit without Tinker taking direct physical risk.

35+ minutes: keep distance and lean on Rearm to chain combos as often as possible — Tinker loses almost any direct fight up close.

Footnote: these timings shift depending on how aggressively the hero is rotating between lanes.

Tinker Counters

Anti-Mage is the single hardest counter: Counterspell's magic resistance blunts most of Tinker's damage, and Blink lets Anti-Mage close the gap before Rearm comes back around.

Storm Spirit: once he hits level 6, Ball Lightning closes the distance on Tinker with almost no warning.

Nyx Assassin: Vendetta gets him onto Tinker unseen, and the follow-up burst punishes the low HP pool.

Templar Assassin: a surprise Blink Dagger arrival punishes any Tinker caught out of position.

Doom: the ultimate blocks items and abilities outright, neutralizing the hero's core gameplan.

Silencer: Global Silence shuts down every part of Tinker's kit across the entire map at once.

Spirit Breaker: Charge of Darkness closes distance from anywhere on the map for a guaranteed catch.

Night Stalker: sees through trees under Dark Ascension, and Crippling Fear removes the getaway option.

Where Tinker is strong on his own: against drafts with no burst mobility and no meaningful magic resistance, where sustained area damage goes through uncontested.

Footnote: how well these counters land depends on how fast the enemy can reach Tinker before Keen Conveyance gets him out.

Synergies with Other Heroes

Tidehunter: Ravage groups the enemy team while March of the Machines plus Laser finish off the cluster.

Enigma: Black Hole holds enemies in place while Tinker lands a full combo through Rearm.

Magnus: Reverse Polarity pins targets exactly inside March of the Machines' radius.

Legion Commander: Duel locks down one target while Tinker keeps pressuring the rest of the map.

Crystal Maiden: her mana aura keeps Tinker casting through the entire game without downtime.

These pairings are situational — real value depends on cooldown syncing and how fast an ally can follow up once the fight starts.

What Experienced Tinker Players Do

  • land the full ability combo before Rearm, not after, to squeeze maximum value from the reset;
  • use Keen Conveyance for constant rotations instead of sitting on one part of the map;
  • hold distance before committing Laser rather than walking into direct contact;
  • prioritize Intelligence growth to push Eureka!'s cooldown reduction toward the cap;
  • pick up Boots of Travel early when the game plan is built around map-wide influence.

Insider insight: the exact order to fire abilities in always depends on the draft on both sides, the stage of the game, and the current patch — treat any fixed sequence as a starting point, not a rule.

Conclusion

Tinker stays one of the most frustrating heroes to play against — constant magic pressure and map-wide mobility leave the opponent little time to breathe. He's also unforgiving of a misused cooldown, so the hero rewards preparation over reaction. Pick him when your draft wants that constant pressure and you're comfortable tracking every cooldown at once; skip him when the enemy already has the tools to catch a caster out in the open.
