Rune Eaters sweep Aurora: the underdog run becomes proven form

4 min readWinio Team

Rune Eaters defeated Aurora Gaming 2–0 in the second round of the Esports World Cup Survival Stage, securing a place in the playoffs and guaranteeing at least a top-eight finish. The result came one day after their reverse sweep over Virtus.pro, giving the team consecutive elimination-series wins against established opponents.

The Aurora result changes how Rune Eaters’ tournament should be assessed. During groups, they took maps from Xtreme Gaming and BetBoom Team but also lost 0–2 to Falcons and finished several series at 1–1. Those results showed upset potential; beating VP and Aurora across consecutive Bo3s shows something more repeatable.

Aurora entered the matchup from a much stronger position. They finished the group stage with an 8–2 map record, had already secured direct entry into the second Survival round and arrived without having to play the previous day. They were also one of the season’s established contenders and had received a direct invitation to The International 2026.

Rune Eaters still controlled the series without needing another comeback. Against VP, they had to recover from a heavy opening loss and survive a 64-minute second map. Against Aurora, they won both maps directly, including a 37–19 second game completed in just over 39 minutes.

The VP victory proved that Rune Eaters could adapt after falling behind in a Bo3. The Aurora sweep proved that they could also enter a series against a stronger opponent, establish control themselves and sustain it across two drafts.

The result also reinforces the value of their core player matchups. Copy and Malik had already produced strong recent numbers before the Survival Stage, while DarkLord gave the team a reliable carry condition. On the second map against Aurora, DarkLord finished 5/2/17, Copy posted 8/2/10 and Rune Eaters reached 37 kills while limiting Aurora to 19.

Aurora’s first-map approach was built around a late-game Naga Siren for Nightfall, supported by Mikoto’s Viper and Ws’ Centaur Warrunner through the middle stages. Rune Eaters were still able to prevent the draft from reaching the comfortable late-game structure Aurora had targeted.

Winio read: Rune Eaters’ run can no longer be explained mainly through Bo2 volatility or isolated upset maps. They have now won one elimination series through adaptation and another through direct control. The strongest signal is not simply that they beat two recognizable teams; it is that they succeeded through different match conditions, which makes their current form harder for future opponents to solve.

Aurora’s elimination is also more serious than a single unexpected defeat. They entered the series after a strong group stage and had previously beaten this Rune Eaters core in several meetings earlier in 2026. Losing 0–2 therefore suggests that the balance between the teams has changed materially, at least in their current form.

Rune Eaters now advance to face PARIVISION in the playoffs. That is another major increase in difficulty, but their status has already changed: they are no longer only an underdog capable of stealing a map. They have shown they can survive adjustments, control complete series and eliminate teams expected to go deeper.
