How Many Heroes Are There in Dota 2?

Dota 2 has one of the largest playable rosters among competitive multiplayer games. Its heroes range from straightforward frontline fighters to highly complex characters with multiple ability sets, summoned units, transformation mechanics, and unusual interactions.

The size of the roster can look intimidating to a new player, but nobody needs to master every hero. Understanding how heroes are classified makes the pool much easier to approach.

How Many Heroes Are There in Dota 2?

As of July 2026, there are 127 playable heroes in Dota 2. Largo, released with patch 7.40 in December 2025, is the latest addition to the roster.

All 127 heroes are available for free. Unlike games that require players to buy or gradually unlock characters, Dota 2 makes its entire hero pool available from the beginning. Money is only required for optional content such as cosmetic items and Dota Plus.

The total number of heroes changes whenever Valve releases a new one. Older sources may therefore give a total of 125 or 126 and identify Ringmaster or Kez as the newest hero.

Dota 2 Heroes by Primary Attribute

Every Dota 2 hero has Strength, Agility, and Intelligence. These attributes affect basic statistics such as health, armor, attack speed, mana, and regeneration.

Heroes are divided into four groups according to how those attributes contribute to their attack damage:

Primary attributeNumber of heroes
Strength36
Agility35
Intelligence34
Universal22
Total127

The current distribution is relatively even between the three traditional attributes. Universal has fewer heroes because Valve only introduced it as a separate category in 2023.

Strength Heroes

Strength increases maximum health and health regeneration. For Strength heroes, it also increases their base attack damage.

This category includes durable frontliners such as Axe, Tidehunter, Centaur Warrunner, and Dragon Knight. However, Strength heroes are not limited to tanking: the group also contains carries, supports, initiators, and spellcasters.

There are currently 36 Strength heroes. Largo joined this category when Valve released him in December 2025.

Agility Heroes

Agility increases armor and attack speed. It also provides base attack damage to heroes with Agility as their primary attribute.

Many traditional carries belong to this category, including Anti-Mage, Phantom Assassin, Drow Ranger, Juggernaut, and Faceless Void. Their natural scaling often works well with physical damage items, although not every Agility hero is a late-game carry.

There are currently 35 Agility heroes. This total includes Vengeful Spirit, who is currently classified as Agility rather than Universal.

Intelligence Heroes

Intelligence provides mana, mana regeneration, and additional magic resistance. Intelligence heroes also gain base attack damage from it.

The group contains many supports and ability-focused heroes, including Crystal Maiden, Lion, Rubick, Disruptor, and Witch Doctor. It also includes core heroes such as Storm Spirit, Queen of Pain, Outworld Destroyer, and Muerta.

Dota 2 currently has 34 Intelligence heroes. A high Intelligence score does not automatically make a hero a support, just as a low one does not prevent a hero from relying on spells.

Universal Heroes

Universal heroes gain attack damage from all three attributes instead of relying on only one. Each point of Strength, Agility, or Intelligence provides part of a point of base attack damage, making items with several attributes particularly effective for them.

The category includes heroes such as Bane, Windranger, Magnus, Void Spirit, Snapfire, and Marci. Universal heroes can appear in almost any position because the classification describes their statistical scaling rather than their role.

There are currently 22 Universal heroes. Older articles may list 23 because they still count Vengeful Spirit as Universal.

How Dota 2 Hero Roles Work

A hero’s primary attribute does not determine where the hero must play. Roles depend on abilities, scaling, farming requirements, matchups, team composition, facets, and the current balance patch.

Players normally describe roles through the five positions on a team:

PositionCommon nameMain responsibility
Position 1CarryTakes the highest farm priority and scales into the late game
Position 2MidlanerGains solo experience and controls the game’s early tempo
Position 3OfflanerCreates space, initiates fights, or provides frontline presence
Position 4Soft supportRoams, sets up kills, and provides utility
Position 5Hard supportProtects the carry and supplies vision and team utility

These categories are not permanent labels attached to individual heroes. Windranger, for example, can appear as a core or support, while heroes such as Dawnbreaker and Abaddon can move between farming and support positions.

Valve also gives heroes descriptive tags such as Carry, Support, Nuker, Disabler, Durable, Escape, Pusher, and Initiator. A single hero can have several tags because Dota abilities rarely serve only one purpose.

What Is the Newest Hero in Dota 2?

The newest Dota 2 hero is Largo, a Strength hero released with patch 7.40 on December 15, 2025. His arrival increased the total hero count from 126 to 127.

Largo is a frog bard whose abilities revolve around music and team utility. He can use different songs to provide effects such as healing, movement, and offensive bonuses while also using his tongue to interact with allies and enemies.

Although Largo has a Strength primary attribute, his design is primarily support-oriented. This is another example of why attributes should not be treated as strict role categories.

Before Largo, Valve released Kez in November 2024. Kez is a complex Agility hero who can switch between a katana and sai, giving him two different sets of abilities.

How Often Does Valve Add New Heroes?

Valve does not follow a fixed schedule for adding Dota 2 heroes. Recent releases suggest an average of approximately one or two new heroes per year, but the gap between individual additions can vary considerably.

YearHeroes released
2020Hoodwink
2021Dawnbreaker, Marci
2022Primal Beast
2023Muerta
2024Ringmaster, Kez
2025Largo
2026None as of July

Ringmaster and Kez arrived only 77 days apart in 2024. By contrast, more than a year passed between Kez and Largo, while players waited approximately 18 months between Muerta and Ringmaster.

New heroes are often revealed during The International or major seasonal updates, but an announcement does not guarantee an immediate release. Valve announced Ringmaster in October 2023, for example, but did not make him playable until August 2024.

How Many Heroes Should a Beginner Learn?

A beginner does not need to learn how to play all 127 heroes. Starting with three to five heroes in one position provides enough variety without forcing the player to relearn their abilities and item builds every match.

The initial pool should contain relatively straightforward heroes that perform similar responsibilities. A new carry player could focus on heroes with clear farming and fighting patterns, while a support player could choose several heroes with reliable disables or defensive abilities.

Learning to play a small pool is only one part of the process. Players should gradually learn what the other heroes can do, particularly their major disables, escape abilities, and ultimates. Recognizing a dangerous spell is more important than knowing the hero’s complete item build.

Hero Demo and bot matches provide low-pressure ways to examine unfamiliar abilities. Playing a few minutes with a hero is often enough to understand mechanics that are difficult to interpret from a written description.

Conclusion

Dota 2 currently has 127 heroes: 36 Strength, 35 Agility, 34 Intelligence, and 22 Universal. Largo is the newest addition, having joined the game as a Strength hero in December 2025.

The full roster is available for free, but players do not need to master every character. A small personal hero pool combined with a basic understanding of the remaining heroes is enough to begin playing effectively.
